The Genesis and History of Classicist Architecture in Saint Petersburg

This paper addresses classicist architecture in Saint Petersburg, focusing on the origin and the history of the style and its masterpieces designed by eminent architects. At one point, Baroque aesthetics could no longer meet the requirements of the era, and Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli (1700 1771), an outstanding Baroque architect, was dismissed from his post of senior court architect. The new style — Classicism — was supposed to help to solve the urban problems which were caused by the development of the city and the population growth. An increasing fashion for classical forms was also important. This gave boost to Palladian tendencies, which continued into the 19th century. Among many outstanding artists of the period, the most important practitioners of the new style in architecture were: Ivan Starov (1745 1808), Giacomo Quarenghi (1744 1817) and Andrey Voronikhin (1759 1814). Several noteworthy buildings were designed and erected.

Tematem przewodnim niniejszego artykułu jest architektura klasycyzmu w Sankt Petersburgu, zwłaszcza historia i geneza stylu oraz arcydzieła wybitnych architektów. W pewnym momencie barok nie mógł sprostać wymogom epoki, a Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli (1700 1771), wybitny reprezentant tego stylu, został zwolniony ze swojej posady. Nowy styl, czyli klasycyzm, miał w pewnym stopniu rozstrzygnąć problemy urbanistyczne, które były spowodowane rozwojem miasta i wzrostem liczby ludności. Istotne znaczenie miała również moda na formy klasyczne. Można wówczas zaobserwować w architekturze tendencje palladiańskie, które znalazły zastosowanie także w XIX w. Wśród przedstawicieli nowego stylu wymienić należy m.in. następujących architektów: Iwan Starow (1745 1808), Giacomo Quarenghi (1744 1817) oraz Andriej Woronichin (1759 1814). W tamtych czasach działało oczywiście również wielu innych wybitnych twórców. Powstał cały szereg godnych uwagi realizacji architektonicznych.
