The Global Lesson of Southern Cities
The aim of this paper is to analyze the durability of urban and architectonic patterns brought to the “New World” by Spanish conquistadors. I show the transformation of Latin-American cities, from the ones built according to Leyes de Indias chessboard city pattern, through experimenting with twentieth-century modernism, to rehabilitation of so-called informal city. The latter way of thinking cities breaks with colonial tradition and allows us to see Southern America as a continent of new urban revolution.
