Globalization — Television — Culture. Selected Questions — The author of this paper poses the question concerning the extent to which electronic media (particularly television) redefine the social and cultural understanding of space. After the presentation and interpretation of essential views formulated principally in the fields of cultural studies and media studies, the author refers to the views of Anthony Giddens who argues that in the context of the media practices at the age of modernity, places have become increasingly phantasmagorical. A reply to these doubts is provided by Ulf Hannerz who states that what is global is shallow and superficial and what is local is deep. The chance of overcoming the “phantasmagoria effect” is thus provided by local media.
