The Hollanders from the Bug River in Siberia. Language and Identity On the Move
The history of the Lutheran community, which had settled on the Bug river since the second half of the sixteenth century, confirms the claim about the complexities of cultural identity. The Hollanders constituted an ethnic and religious minority within the Polish-Ukrainian frontier. Their worldview has since the seventeenth century been based on Polish as a language used for religious cult and local dialect dominant in daily life. The descendants of the Hollanders from the Bug river have emigrated to Siberia for economic reasons during the Tzar colonizations, however they have retained the hybrid character of their language and identity. The paper presents the material gathered during my fieldwork.
