The text discusses the ways un which Islam, the Muslim civilization and the policies of neighboring countries (Turkey, Morocco) were viewed by the elites of the eighteenth century Europe. These opinions were unequivocal, ranging from idolatric admiration of Mahomet (Henri de Boulainvillers) to disdainful views on the Koran (Edward Gibbon).
