Real Utopia: On Socio-Political Dimensions of the Internet
The article elaborates on Manuel Castells’s thesis put forward in his book The Internet Galaxy: Reflections on the Internet, Business and Society (Oxford 2001) which attributes the libertarian character to the Internet. Starting from the problems with defining libertarian ideology, I point at those areas of the Internet and different ideological and legal issues connected with computing technologies where this ideology manifests itself. I also argue that the virtual world can be thought of as a full realization of the assumptions of libertarianism which contravenes the suggested utopianism of this ideology.
