Tocharczycy i ich język – zagadka obecności ludów indoeuropejskich w zachodnich Chinach; krytyczna analiza wybranych zagadnień i teorii
Celem niniejszego artykułu jest przybliżenie czytelnikowi złożonego problemu obecności ludów pochodzenia indoeuropejskiego na obszarze dzisiejszego regionu autonomicznego Xinjiang-Uygur w zachodnich Chinach. Od przeszło wieku, dwie grupy dowodów składają się na liczne teorie i spekulacje naukowców; starsze, dotyczące badań nad najbardziej na wschód wysuniętą gałęzią indoeuropejskiej rodziny językowej: językami tocharskimi; oraz młodsze, dotyczące licznych znalezisk archeologicznych na obszarze Kotliny Tarymskiej, które wskazują na obecność ludności kaukazoidalnej na tym obszarze już około 2000 r. p.n.e. Dowody pochodzące z analizy dostępnych źródeł pozwalają na formułowanie rozlicznych teorii na temat pochodzenia i kulturowej proweniencji Tocharczyków. Tekst skupia się na analizie dowodów lingwistycznych pochodzących z dostępnych źródeł chińskich, oraz próbie krytycznej oceny niektórych spośród najbardziej popularnych hipotez wysuwanych przez badaczy w świetle możliwych do ustalenia faktów.

The Mystery of Tocharians and Tocharian-Speaking Peoples in Western China. Linguistic Evidence for the Presence of Indo-European Peoples in Western China — Analysis of Current Issues — The aim of this article is to bring the reader closer to the complex problem of the presence of Indo-European peoples in the Xinjiang-Uygur autonomous region of present-day Western China. For more than a century, two groups of evidence have been a source of many scientific theories and speculations; older, concerning research on the easternmost branch of the Indo-European language family: Tocharian languages; and later, concerning numerous archaeological findings in the area of the Tarim Basin, which indicate the presence of the Caucasians in this area already around 2000 BC. Evidence from the analysis of available sources allowed for the formulation of numerous theories on the origins and cultural provenance of the Tocharian people. The text focuses on the analysis of linguistic evidence from the analysis of available Chinese sources, and an attempt to critically evaluate the most-popular scientific hypotheses in the light of available facts.
