Outcast in Theatre
The paper provides a brief historical survey of the complex presence of the outcasts in theatre. If offers a series of selected case studies from ancient Greek tragedy (aulete, chorus, Cassandra, Io, Ajax and Philoctetes), medieval theatre (Jesus and Mary Magdalene as characters in the performances), Elizabethan theatre (boy-actors), butoh (Tatsumi Hijikata), Polish theatre of the Holocaust (Akropolis by Jerzy Grotowski and Dead Class by Tadeusz Kantor) and the theatre of the oppressed by Augusto Boal.
