From the Dirty City to the Invisible One. Wrocław in European Guidebooks up to 1945
The purpose of this paper is to describe the evolution of Wrocław’s image in guidebooks since the 18th century up to 1945. Down-to-earth realism of the traveler’s relations – in which Wrocław had not seem to be an especially tourist-friendly place, but had been instead filled with lively activity — was replaced by popular mass-market editors with the idealistic image of open-air museum. A modern guidebook made the real city invisible.
