One Wrong Turn: Doug Rickard in the World of Google Street View

The author analyses the photographies of Doug Rickard of “New American Picture” cycle (2012). The American artist ventured into the world of Google Street View in search of compelling images. The effect was a project in the convention of found photography which documents the life of American suburbs and reflects on the nature of images produced without the activity of the photographer. The article characterises the specific aesthetics of Google Street View photographies seeks to reconstruct the narratives that support them. In conclusion, the author points to the process of humanization that Rickard’s images evoke. In place of an indifferent eye there appears a compassionate gaze.
