Identity of an Individual in the Network Society

This article analyzes the narrative approaches to identity as understood through the concept of the network society described by Manuel Castells and of modernity by Anthony Giddens. The network society, as a result of the computerization and globalization of life, is characterized by the dualism of what is particular and universal, local and global, and individual and collective. A space-time division of the network society takes the individual out of traditional forms of the community of space and time. Such categories as interpretation, understanding, time, community and communication have a fundamental importance for understanding the identity of an individual. Therefore, it is legitimate to understand the individual’s identity on the grounds of so-called narrative concepts of identity.
