From Quality Control of Goods to Basic Social Problems. The Evolution of Consumerism

Basing on literature review, the author has analyzed the development of consumerism, defined as any activity undertaken to promote and defend the interests of consumers. In the initial period of consumerism, activists fought for good quality products and access to reliable, honest information about them. In successive waves they focused not only on the quality of goods, but the insight into the goals, strategies of corporations, as well as the ability to influence their activities; they also started to look for ideological legitimacy of their actions. Today consumerism focuses on broad social costs of development of the world capitalism.
