The City as a Medium and Form of Globalization Processes
The theory of social systems distances itself from spatial categories. This is so because functional systems do not have spatial existence, and the territorial structures, such as the city, do not describe adequately the modern world society. The article presents a discussion about the place of the city in this theory and its revision of the function of space. The city is posited as a machine of differentiation, inclusion, and synchronization. It is argued that all the forms of differentiation taking place in the world society are duplicated in the city. In this aspect, it acts as a medium and form of the global processes.
