Traditional Law and The Formation of Multi-Factor Self-Identification of Chechens in Georgia
The article presents the formation of the practice of habitual law among Chechens, which has been an important element of their culture and social structure, and discusses the changes it has been subject to since the nineteenth century. The author analyzes the gathered materials to conclude that the reshaping of legal habits was influenced by the colonization by Tzar Russia and then the Soviet Union. The way the common law functions today is a reaction to social changes and identity choices determined by the influx since the 90’s of the globalized, radical current of Islam.
