Sport, Globalization and Ethnic Identity. The Basque Example
The paper discusses the role of sport in the context of interacting trends in the contemporary world – globalization and ethnic identity. The author describes the Basques and different kinds of sports in their country, showing that these sports can serve as active responses to globalization which help them to preserve their ethnic identity in a globalized world. The author argues that sports can be conceived as cultural reactions of local communities to the unifying and universalizing consequences of globalization.
