Trzy kultury

Stanisław Jakóbczyk

Three cultures

National culture – attractive for both the native and for others – should keep a balance between locality and globality. If any of these factors outweighs the other, national culture becomes banal for some and incomprehensible for others. The balance may be disturbed by snobbishness. Fine arts can serve as an illustration of these relations (I am discussing the Polish paitning of the 20s and 30s of the 20th. c.), as well as the everyday language and terminological fashions in contemporary humanities.
