The Role of Free Trade with Infant Industry Participation in the Construction of World Economy
Presenting the stages of the development of commerce in the nineteenth century, the author shows the benefits and costs of free trade and infant industry. The protection of domestic industry has been used by many countries at an early stage of their economic development, including the UK and the US. The said protection is still used today by underdeveloped countries. Infant industry policy, although criticized by liberals, if applied skillfully and selectively, can be a major step towards free trade. The article discusses this issue referring to statistics on trade, tariffs, and to conflicting views of economists and the historians of economy.
