A Fantastic Century, a Century of Fantasy: Fantasy Literature, Rehabilitation of Myth, and the Search for a New Story of a Unified Earth
Literature-wise, the twentieth century was a century of the fantastic. The mode’s most recognizable genre so far has been mythopoeic fantasy. This paper attempts to provide cultural situatedness for the genre. I suggest that mythopoeic fantasy is an imaginative response to challenges facing humanity after the disintegration of Western culture’s common ground. Tied to the rehabilitation of myth and reflecting a search for a conceptual paradigm suited to the needs of the unifying world, mythopoeic fantasy contributes to the shaping of the modern mythology of the unifying human race.
